چکیده

Weak surface reflections from a simple lens can be used to observe interferences between collimated and focusing laser beams. The superimposed beams ͑one resulting from a double reflection within the lens͒ can be made to have similar intensities near the focus of the weaker beam by choosing the lens prescription and the divergence of the incident laser. An advantage to this inexpensive setup is its stability against vibrations. The relative phase between the two beams can be easily controlled through small adjustments to the lens alignment. Students using this setup with a CCD camera can explore the amplitude and phase properties of a Gaussian laser beam in the vicinity of the focus. This article also includes a brief review of Gaussian beams in the context of the Fresnel diffraction.

Electrically switchable cylindrical Fresnel lens based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals using a Michelson interferometer

Fabricating an electrically switchable cylindrical Fresnel lens based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (H-PDLC) using a Michelson interferometer is reported. Simplicity of the method and possibility of fabricating different focal length lenses in a single set up are among the advantages of the method. It is demonstrated that the Fresnel structured zone plate acts as a cylindrica...

Numerical Calculation of Coupling Efficiency for an Elegant Hermite-Cosh-Gaussian Beams

The ABCD matrix method is used to simplifying the theoretical coupling efficiency calculation of Elegant Hermite-Cosh-Gaussian (EHChG) laser beams to a Single Mode Fiber (SMF) with a quadric lens formed on the tip. The integrals of coupling efficiency relation are calculated numerically by Boole method. Meanwhile, the structure parameters of surface-lensed fiber are optimized in numerical simul...

Spatial superpositions of Gaussian beams

We explore an interferometric beam shaping technique that considers the coaxial superposition of two Gaussian beams. This technique is traditionally implemented in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer; however, to avoid phase shift drift due to vibrations and thermal effects we employ amplitude and phase modulation with a spatial light modulator (SLM) to achieve the beam shaping. We consider two Gauss...

Spatial properties of coaxial superposition of two coherent Gaussian beams.

In this paper, we explore theoretically and experimentally the laser beam shaping ability resulting from the coaxial superposition of two coherent Gaussian beams (GBs). This technique is classified under interferometric laser beam shaping techniques contrasting with the usual ones based on diffraction. The experimental setup does not involve the use of some two-wave interferometer but uses a sp...

Atom trapping in an interferometrically generated bottle beam trap.

We demonstrate an optical bottle beam trap created by interfering two fundamental Gaussian beams with different waists. The beams are derived from a single laser source using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer whose arms have unequal magnifications. Destructive interference of the two beams from the Mach-Zehnder leads to a three-dimensional intensity null at the mutual focus of the beams. We demonst...
